Spanish Flu – U.S. Patient Zero

Ancestry.com does a nice work-up on Private Albert Martin Gitchell, considered America’s Patient Zero in what would be called the Spanish Flu epidemic. Estimates were 500,000 – 700,000 deaths in the U.S. and 50 – 100 million worldwide.

Albert survived, married, and had a long life, dying in 1968 at the age of 78. He is buried in the South Dakota State Veterans Cemetery in Hot Springs, Fall River County, South Dakota.
